A Message From Tommy Bowden
Dear Fellow Mohigans &
Morgantown High School Supporters,
In 1926, Pony Lewis Field was inaugurated as the home of Morgantown High School (“MHS”) athletics. Pony Lewis Field and the surrounding athletic facilities are the prideful epicenter of MHS’s campus- a place where ten of the school’s twenty-one (21) varsity sports have built twenty-seven (27) state championships.
As a member of the 2008 MHS Athletic Hall of Fame, I know that MHS’s academic and athletic excellence go hand-in-hand. Some of my fondest memories are my days as a student-athlete at MHS that helped set the foundation for my collegiate careers as a player and coach.
Unfortunately, the athletic facilities as MHS have not been updated throughout the years and the last major renovation to the facilities was over twenty years ago. For over eight years, Pony Lewis Field and the surrounding athletic facilities have hosted thousands of sporting events which has caused the need for imminent renovation. MHS’s twenty-one (21) varsity sports, and the greater Monongalia County community, deserve athletic facilities that are commensurate with the pride and tradition that defines MHS.
To continue the tradition of excellence at Morgantown High School, a new fundraising project is underway – “Honoring the Past, Building for the Future.” This $6 million campaign to renovate MHS’s athletic facilities includes a new multi-use building, new and renovated bleachers, new concession buildings state-of-the-art field turf, new lighting, a new scoreboard, new fencing, and related facility improvements.
The success of the “Honoring the Past, Building for the Future” campaign relies solely on our ability to raise the necessary funds to complete the project. Our efforts will be anchored by a generous donation from the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust which has offered a matching one-to-one (1:1) grant for up to $2 million. The Morgantown High School Foundation is also supporting these efforts, along with the Monongalia County School Board, which has committed $2 million.
Please join us, as community leaders and MHS supporters, and make a gift towards the renovation of Pony Lewis Field and the athletics complex and MHS. Every dollar you give means more as it turns into two dollars due to the matching program. Name recognition may also be available depending on the amount of the gift and established naming opportunity guidelines. Your support will truly make a difference to the greater-Monongalia County community and MHS.
Thank you for your support!
